It was a privilege to lead a three-country study of agri-food MSMEs for the APEC Growing Business Partnership in collaboration with a capable project team. Our team was encouraged to challenge existing assumptions about agri-food MSMEs and we feel as though our study helped move knowledge and policymaking forward. A highlight of the project was the opportunity to participate in and speak at the Innovative and Dynamic Startups and MSMEs workshop in Ho Chi Minh City. It was encouraging to see our findings well received by participants from throughout the APEC region.

It was a great honor for me to be part of the research project with the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. Through the course of carrying out our research, my co-researcher and I enhanced our knowledge of innovation policy directed towards MSME development in our own country and others. This will be invaluable to us for designing and implementing innovation policy in Vietnam in the future. I also appreciate the opportunity to present our research in September 2017 in Ho Chi Minh City. We hope that our research will benefit policymakers in Vietnam and other APEC developing economies, and that we will have the opportunity to collaborate again in the future.

Fueling High Tech Start-Ups was an exciting project to work on with the Asia Pacific Foundation. We learned a great deal as we spoke to young entrepreneurs, investors and mentors in Canada, Indonesia, The Philippines and Vietnam. It was interesting to look for areas of overlap and unique start-up world insights from these APEC economies vs. Canada. I enjoyed the opportunity to present preliminary results and gather more data at the research workshop in Ho Chi Minh City. There is much entrepreneurial learning to be shared between our countries and we look forward to doing further work in the area.
